Description
Feature shown on: NZMS260 R10; NZTopo50-BA32 710294; 'Auckland, Hauraki Gulf. Lit. motu: island; tapu: sacred or forbidden. The name was conferred by Taikehu while the Tainui canoe was in the Hauraki Gulf, in memory of Motutapu in Hawaiki. The name appears in quite a number of parts of New Zealand, on occasion as a contraction of Motutapu- a-Tinirau, referring to the island of this name that Tinirau lived with Hinauri, the sister of Maui. See Mokoia Island.' Source: Reed, A.W. & Peter Dowling, Place Names of New Zealand, 2010.
