Lower Matakuhia Hut

A basic but pleasant DOC hut at the downstream end of a large sandy clearing, littered with driftwood. The hut has 6 bunks, an open fire, and water from the river some 50m away. The floor is of pinex on 900m spaced joists - far in excess of what the material can cope with, and as such has become an undulating series of dips and ridges. But otherwise, the place is in good shape. About 7 parties per year write their name in the hutbook, though there's probably a few illiterates on top of that. Most are hunters who fly in, though a few visit on foot on day/overnight trips from bases at the upper hut. The remainder are trampers. Basic Hut/bivvy
