Description
Mitchells Cottage is a stone-built miner's hut near Alexandra in Central Otago. It is listed as a Category I Historic place and is one of the best surviving examples of the stonemason's craft in New Zealand.
It was built by gold miner, Andrew Mitchell between 1880 and 1904. Stone from schist outcrops on-site was used for the construction and the quarrying marks are clearly visible on the local rocks. The main house features a scullery and 3 rooms, whilst lean-to behind the house features a laundry and 2 more bedrooms. The house was home for a family of 10.
Mitchells cottage is a histoic structure and available for day-use only - no overnight stays are permitted in the cottage.
