Description
The largest island off New Zealand's North Island. The island lies approximately 100km northeast of downtown Auckland on the outer edge of Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-AY34 176934; 'On 24 November 1769 Captain James Cook described the Hauraki Gulf as ‘being defended from the Sea by a Chain of Large Islands which I have named Barrier Isles.’ Over time the names Great Barrier and Little Barrier were applied to the two largest islands. Aotea is translated as ‘The island enveloped in white clouds’ and is also linked to the ancestral waka of that name, which visited the island. Cook and crew recorded the name ‘Waootaia’ for the island.' Source: Dowling, Peter & A.W.
