Description
Island, approximately halfway between Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island) and the North Island coastline. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-AY33 871916; Statement of Association provided by Ngāti Manuhiri: Te Hauturu-o-Toi, is the traditional name for Little Barrier Island. The name, meaning “the windswept post of Toi”, applies to the whole island and to its highest peak, though the peak name is officially Mount Hauturu by NZ Gazette 2004 (33) p.751. The island is visible from almost all parts of the traditional rohe or tribal domain of Ngāti Manuhiri. The physical presence of Te Hauturu-o-Toi, its mauri or spiritual essence, and its traditional history are central to the mana, identity, unity, and tribal affiliations of Ngāti Manuhiri, extending over many generations down to the present. Te Hauturu-o-Toi features in whakataukī, pepeha and waiata, and is a reminder of the earliest period of human settlement. (see Little Barrier Island Hauturu, complied by W.M.Hamilton, DSIR, pp. 18-23). The name stems from the arrival of the renowned ancestor and voyager Toi Te Huatahi within Te-Moana-Nui-o-Toi (the Hauraki Gulf) and his brief occupation of the island. Ngāti Manuhiri are his direct decendants. Te Hauturu-o-Toi is not only seen as a place associated with, and occupied by, the ancestors of Ngāti Manuhiri. It is also seen as being a tupuna or ancestor in its own right. Te Haututu-o-Toi was occupied by Ngāti Manuhiri as a permanent home for many generations until 1896. The name of Hauturu is widely recognised, however its correct name is Te Hauturu-o-Toi, which is not widely known.
