Description
Small island at Manukau Entrance by Burnett Head.; This name derives from the legend concerning a chief who visited the island, ate para root, and suffered from diarrhoea. Amending spelling error. There is some doubt whether or not this feature can be called an island, now that accretion has joined it to the mainland.; 'Commonly translated as Rock Island; also written Paratutai. According to Graeme Murdoch the name refers to the distinct rise and fall of the tide here, at the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. A landmark on the island is Te Hoe-a-Kupe, lit. Kupe’s paddle.'
