Description
An small populated volcanic island in Manuakau Harbour approximately 3km long and connected to the mainland at Mangere Bridge by a causeway and aqauduct. The volcanic cone has long since been levelled through development and quarrying. NZTopo50-BB31 555075.; 'The proper name may have been Puketututu, said by Rukutai to mean Chanting of incantations over the soil as it was being prepared for the cultivation of kumara. Again, as the island was something of a sanctuary for seabirds, it was placed under tapu during the mating season, and was at one time called Puketapu. Another meaning of tutu was preservation of birds in their own fat, and this operation was probably performed here when the tapu was lifted during the season for snaring the birds.
