Description
An island located approximately 2.5km north-west of Cape Rodney. Feature shown on: NZMS260 R09; NZTopo50-AY32 615 851; "Statement of Association provided by Ngāti Manuhiri: Motu-Hāwere-a-Maki, generally referred to as Motu Hāwere, is a name of particular significance to Ngāti Manuhiri. In Ngāti Manuhiri oral tradition this place name stems from the fact that the island was likened to the shape of an ear pendant, or hāwere, worn by Makinui, the father of the eponymous ancestor Manuhiri. Motu-Hāwere-a-Maki was later occupied by Te Maeaea a great grandson of Manuhiri, and by a close relative who was named Te Hāwere a Maki. Title to the island was awarded to Ngāti Manuhiri in 1901. (Native Land Court, Auckland Minute Book 7, May 1901, pp. 190 – 191). Te Ara – The Encyclopaedia of New Zealand records: “Goat Island is named after the goats released by early European seafarers, to provide food for those who became marooned.”"
