Description
Feature shown on: NZMS260 U15 Edition 1 1982 Limited Revision 1996; 'Mokoia is derived from a pun on two words: ko: digging implement; and moko: facial tattoo. During inter-tribal warfare on the island a chief was stabbed by a ko in the moko pattern on his face. An earlier name was Te Motutapu-a-Tinirau: lit. te: the; motu: island; tapu: sacred; a: of; Tinirau, a name with legendary allusions across Polynesia. See also Motutapu Island. On this island is the pool known as Hinemoa’s Bath, the Maori name of which is Waikimihia: lit. wai: water; kimihia: sought for. After her long swim across the lake, directed by the flute music of her lover, Tutanekai, Hinemoa rested in the warm pool and was discovered there by Tutanekai.'
