Description
Active marine volcano in the Bay of Plenty. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-BC40 698391; Whakaari means to make visible". When Ngātoroirangi was freezing to death on Mount Tongariro he called upon his sisters Kuiwai and Haungaroa in Hawaiiki for help. They dispatched two fire taniwha which travelled swiftly under the sea and ground. The spirits surfaced several times to to check where they were going, one spot being offshore, forming Whakaari/White Island. The name White Island was given by Lieutenant Cook on account of the dense clouds of white steam emitted. The feature is named Isle of Wight and Isle of White on some manuscript charts, giving the name a double meaning by reference to the island off the south coast of England.
