Description
Islet situated off the East headland of Purau Bay on the South side of Lyttleton Harbour. Pigeon Bay Survey District. Feature shown on Infomap 346-02 Te Wai Pounamu Edition 1 1995; Site of an early fortified pa. Possible literal translation, ri meaning rope, papa meaning flat rock, from Māori Folk Tales of the Port Hills, James Cowan, 1923 (LXXI p357). Instead of Ripa; 'This is the correct form of the name which has supplanted the earlier Ripa Island: lit. ri: flax rope; papa: flat rock. The reference is evidently to a canoe moored to the island.'
