Description
An island adjacent to Tory Channel / Kura Te Au and Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui approximately 14 km northeast of Picton. NZTopo50-BQ30 100398. Feature shown on: NZMS260 P27; Te Atiawa and Ngati Tama note that this island is the location of traditions of Kupe but highly significant to Te Atiawa. Kupe finally dispatched whekenui with a massive Arapaoa (downwards blow) to its head, spiritual home of Te Atiawa, many Kaimoana sites, many papakaianga, fortified Pa sites, whaling sites, cultivation sites, waka landing, building waka, repairs, and Arapawa is a spelling error. Ngati Kuia Tribunal evidence notes that Ara means ‘to rise’ and ‘paoa’ is to strike with a weapon. The Island was named after Kupe’s rising stroke which killed the octopus Te Wheke o Muturangi. It features in waiata and stories of the iwi.
