Description
Major island at the northern extremity of Marlborough Sounds. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-BN28 724802; Rangitoto is a Kupe name, the full meaning of the whole name is ‘red heavens look to the south’. In Kurahaupō traditions it is simply Rangitoto, with the ‘ki te Tonga’ added by later iwi. The D'Urville part of the island's name is a reminder of the skilful seamanship of Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville, who led a dangerous expedition through Te Aumiti / French Pass.
