Description
Located at northernmost tip of the Marlborough Sounds, 2km to the north-east of Cape Stephens. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-BN29 843973; Named after Sir Philip Stephens, Secretary to the Admiralty from 1763 to 1795 and Member of Parliament for Sandwich from 1768 to 1806. Named by Captain Cook. (Page 12 Rickard); NZGB Correspondence Vol. 53 p.64 - Notes on D'Urville Island place names: Takapou=Matipou tree. Rewa=float. Stephen's Island was once covered with Matipou trees, particularly around the lower parts of the island right down to the waters edge. It looked like an island of Matipous floating on the ocean. Thus, Takapou-rewa. Older names were Ti-tapu and Ti-tapua, possibly relating to the tuatara lizards often regarded as a bad omen and best left tapu.
