Poor Knights consisted of hunks of bread dipped in egg and fried — and Cook, in one of his rare moments of imagination, may have used it for these islands, ‘brown, upstanding and rocky’. The ‘Knights’ in order of size, commencing with the largest, are Tawhitirahi, Aorangi, Motukapiti, Aorangaia and Archway (Mammoth).'
