Description
Small island in Lake Whakamaru; Site of a Christian Youth Camp, name was obtained by Mr T Lind from old Māori living in the area. It can be translated as "The hill rising to the abode of Rangi" or "Rising to Heaven". As this suits the present purpose very well it has been preserved and in common use since the 1960s. Island was formed about 1953 through hydro development i.e. raising of the lake level.
