Description
An island approximately 4km northeast of Opoutere Beach on Coromandel Peninsula. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-BB36 602933; Ngāti Hei history: 'Ngāti Hei has a long association with the island. The proposed name, Waikaia [sic], is the name that has been passed down for generations from tupuna. This island is seen as one of the many floats of the great fishing net that stretches across the rohe moana of Ngāti Hei. Ngāti Hei speak of huge physical nets that were strung between islands in the rohe moana and caught massive amounts of kaimoana which was then distributed between the whanau for the islands involved. The net at Waikaia would have stretched to Kuranui (Penguin Island). Similar nets would have existed in the area included on the islands around Whakahou.'
