Description
Two very isolated small islands approximately 2.4km southwest of Devils Point, Coromandel Peninsula. Feature shown on: NZTopo50-BA35 501279; Ngāti Hei history: 'These islands are, like Waikaiā, seen as one of the many floats of the great fishing net that stretches across the rohe moana of Ngāti Hei. Ngāti Hei speak of huge physical nets that were strung between islands in the rohe moana and caught massive amounts of kaimoana which was then distributed between the whanau for the islands involved. Nets were strung between the two islands of Motumāhanga. This is the closest of these islands to Tapu Point, the last bastion where Ngāti Hei made a stand against Ngapuhi during their invasion and the site of a major Ngāti Hei urupa.'
