Description
A very small island in Waikato River approximately 1km northeast of Taupo CBD and less than 100m north of adjacent island Motutāhae. Locally known as Rat Island. NZTopo50-BG36 681146; Ngāti Tūwharetoa history: The island was classified as an “Island Pā.” It was used as a Pā, burial site, cultivation and fishery site while it was still in hapū ownership. The origin of the name is unknown but it may refer to the trapping of kai.
