Description
Feature shown on: NZMS260 R26 PtR25; NZTopo50-BP32 620763; The full original Māori name for the island is ‘Te Waewae-Kapiti-o-Tara-rāua-ko-Rangitāne'; Ngāti Toa (who have membership on Te Whakaminenga o Kapiti – a local iwi group) advised that the full name relates to the junction line of the boundaries between the Ngāi Tara and Rangitāne tribal lands. The name does not relate to the single word Kāpiti, meaning cabbage.
