Description
Islet west of Mirounga Bay offshore from the northwest coast of Antipodes Island. Feature shown on: NZOITopo25-AI01; The name was applied in 1947 by Admiral Byrd (USA) on return from Antarctica to honour Colonel Thomas Orde Hans Lees (1877-1958). Lees was famed as a member of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition 1914-17. He later went on to serve on the British diplomatic mission to Japan. Having lived there for 20 years, in 1941 when Japan entered World War Two he was expelled, with his family to New Zealand.
