Description
Main island in the Kermadec Islands Group, triangular in shape and to the north of the Kermadec chain. Feature shown on: NZOITopo25-KI01; Named by La Perouse D'Entrecasteaux after Joseph Raoul, quatermaster on D'Entrecasteaux's vessel La Recherche. Raoul first caught sight of the island on the 16 March, 1793, climbing the mast to verify it existed. The island was named for him on 17 March 1793; 'Maori name: Rangitahua. Named by Turi, the explorer, who was on a voyage, following the directions of Kupe. Also known as Kowhitiwhiti. The nearby reef was named Taputapuatea.'
