Info Origin
Arohaki takes its name from a description of “the taking off of the birds, one by one, circling around”. Arohaki Lagoon is a significant area for Ngāti Whare as the place where all the water birds congregate and it was carefully managed as mahinga manu. It was abundant with native trout including the kōkopu, raumahe and mārearea, which attracted bird life, including the whio and parera, which were hunted traditionally by Ngāti Whare. The fish in Arohaki also provided sustenance. Ngāti Whare consider Arohaki to be a Tohu, or sign/marker for the area, which the birdlife navigates from. An old waka was discovered at the lagoon around 1955.
