Info Origin
Name submitted in February 1971 by the Canterbury Chief Surveyor after research in connection with the revision of NZMS1 S79. The lakes were discovered by Sir Julius von Haast in 1862. See 'The Life and Times of Sir Julius von Haast' p. 211. Also referred to in 'Aorangi' by J Wilson p.49.
