One of a series of names sourced for a new edition of the map of Stewart Island. Names were either taken from existing maps, charts, or publications, or supplied by Mr Roy Traill, or other Stewart Island locals and confirmed by Mr Traill. Named after Alexander Traill, the son of Mr Roy Traill, who is presumed to be the discoverer of the lake.
