Info Origin
First named by T H Potts in April 1957, when he explored the country between the upper Rakaia and upper Ashburton Rivers, with Leach and Phillips. Possibly named as a result of his party having camped at this area on his way. Named Lake Howard by later runholders, this was thought to be the original name, and Gazetted in 1953 page 86, but the name never gained common usage. Replaced Lake Howard (Gaz. 23/01/1953 3:86) with original name.
