Description
Fed by Takiritawai River and exits into the sea. Feature shown on Infomap 346-02 Te Wai Pounamu Edition 1 1995; NZTopo50-BY24 797502; 'Canterbury, at the base of Banks Peninsula. After William Forsyth, MP, a member of the Canterbury Association. Maori names: Kaituna: lit. kai: food; tuna: eel; and Wairewa, lit. wai: water; rewa: lifted up. The lake provided large supplies of succulent eels. Its bed was believed to have been scooped out by the early explorer Rakaihautu. As a sign that his labours were finished, Rakaihautu thrust his ko (digging implement) into a nearby hill, thus lifting it up, and accounting for the name Wairewa.'
