Lake between Kaherekoau Mountains and Princess Mountains. Feature shown on Infomap 346-02 Te Wai Pounamu Edition 1 1995; 'Fiordland National Park. Formerly spelt Hauroto. James McKerrow, the first person to write the name, spelt it Howloko. The New Zealand Geographic Board adopted Hauroko, believing it to be the South Island variant of Haurongo, lit. hau: wind; rongo: sound; i.e. Sound of the wind. But it may correctly be Hauroto, lit. hau: wind; roto: lake; i.e. Windy lake.'
