A lake approximately 19km west-northwest of Waimarino, which feeds into Waikauwau Stream. NZTopo50-BH33 883640.; Te Korowai o Wainuiārua history: 'Pohoare is situated within the Waimarino block at the head waters of the Waikauwau stream, a tributary of the Retāruke river and is surrounded by large hills. “Pohoare” is the old name for this lake, it was an important site for cleansing rituals after battle. Returning war parties would stop at Pohoare to cleanse their weapons in the “wai tapu” before returning home.'
