Description
Feature shown on: NZMS260 F41 Edition 1 1991 Limited Revision 1996; NZTopo50-CB11 695107; 'Otago. Three months after Donald Hay’s exploration of Lake Wakatipu on a mokihi (a raft made of flax stems), two shepherds from the Glenquoich station, Robert and Archie Cameron, went to see the lake that Hay had discovered. They crossed the Kawarau River to the lake, which they named after Hay. There is reason to believe that the notorious Bully Hayes inadvertently had his name fathered upon the lake, which is permanently named Lake Hayes. Maori name: Waiwhakaata, lit. wai: water; whakaata: to reflect.' Source: Reed, A.W. & Peter Dowling, Place Names of New Zealand, 2010.
