Feature shown on: NZMS260 D41 Edition 1 1995; NZTopo50-CB09 139242; 'Fiordland National Park, Eglinton Valley. The name was given in 1913 by the Lands and Survey Department surveyor Tresedder after an assistant whose name was probably Lochie or Lachie. But E.S. Dollimore notes that the name should probably be Lake Lochiel: ‘In one of the early maps,’ he wrote, ‘the “l” of the last syllable coincides with part of a broken line indicating a route.’' Source: Reed, A.W. & Peter Dowling, Place Names of New Zealand, 2010.
