Info Origin
Name proposed in December 2009 by Waikato District Council. Local iwi and hapu identified ‘Puketirini’ as the original Māori name of the area within which the lake is situated. The original lake, Lake Rotoiti, became Crown land in 1865, was subsequently drained for mining by State Coal Mines (latterly known as Solid Energy). In 1993 work began to reinstate the disused mine back into a lake. The lake has been unofficially known as Lake Weaver or Weavers Lake. Puketirini’ translates to English as ‘hills and streams’ – ‘puke’ meaning ‘hills’ and ‘tirini’ being a transliteration of ‘streams’.
