Info Origin
One of the local translations of the name is Roto = Lake, Rangi = chief (more correctly sky, light, day, or a name bestowed upon a person of rank proclaiming in acknowledgement of their high status) It is the longest man-made lake in New Zealand and it would be the 'chief lake' south of Taupo. The lake is in close proximity to Rotorangi I Block, a portion of Māori land owned by a large number of local Māori. Rotorangi Block was excluded from the land confiscation following the Māori uprisings of the 1880's.
