name submitted by the Chief Surveyor Invercargill, September 1968, on behalf of Mr Keen, ex-surveyor of Te Anau. The lake is named after George Wera Raura Te Aroha, who was the Māori guide to W H Stephen and C J Nairn, the first white men to reach Lake Te Anau.
