In Local usage since 1890's. Instead of "Wahi or Rotongaru" 1936 Hon p. 30. Correspondence Vol XLII p44 "Wāhi is correct Māori. I can only suggest the double vowel came into use by Pakeha people to emphasise the long ā vowel and was then adopted by the Māori People." Correspondence Vol XII p65 "Waahi… part of a fuller ancient name Te Wahi-puku (the cut-opened stomach)"
