Info Origin
Heretaunga Tamatea history (extract): 'Whatumā is the proper Māori name of this lake at Waipukurau whose full name is – ‘te wāhi e mākona ai te whatumanawa o te tangata’ (the place where the sustenance of people is to be satisfied) for it was a pataka kai (a storehouse of food) full of fish, fresh water mussels, eels, and in the surrounding forest, birds, particularly kēruru. Not surprisingly, it is surrounded by pa sites and occupied villages associated with the pā. The area has been hotly contended over time because of the huge abundance at this place.'
