Info Origin
In Ngati Tahu tradition Mata Kopae lagoon was an important nohoanga kai, a food gathering place where parties rested and reprovisioned whilst travelling. Mata Kopae is an ancient name thought to have been applied during the Waitaha period of South Island Māori. The area was renowned as a resource of both eel and bird life and was geographically well placed as a staging point for North/Shore travelling parties. Mata Kopae was not really mahinga kai, or place worked as part of the regular food gathering and preservation supplies.
