Description
Lake north east of Lake Hauroko and the Kaherekoau Mounains and south of Lake Manapouri. Feature shown on: NZMS260 C44 Edition 1 1997; NZTopo50-CE07 685044; 'Fiordland National Park. The Maori name was Manokiwai, a personal name. Surveyor-General James McKerrow wrote to James Cowan that his informant Solomon told him of two lakes in the district, ‘Howloko’ and ‘Monowai’. ‘Howloko’ has since been corrected to ‘Hauroko’; McKerrow recognised he hadn’t understood ‘Manokiwai’, and was likely responsible for ‘Monowai’, meaning ‘one water’. However, Dr John Hall-Jones proposes that ‘monowai’ is a corruption of Monoao, the Maori name for the grass tree, Drachophyllum subulatum, which grows at the lake.'
