The two lakes were named by David McKellar after his horse, the name being a Gaelic term of endearment. Herries Beattie noted that alongside the official names, North and South Mavora, there were ‘the runholders’ names of Upper and Lower Mavora; the sportsmen’s names of Big and Little Mavora; and the Maori names of Manawapore and Hikuraki. We could supply a few more, such as Large and Small Mavora, and Long and Short Mavora.’ North Mavora Lake was Moturau and Manawapore to the Maori. See Manapouri, Lake. Little or South Mavora was Hikuraki, lit. hiku: tail; raki (rangi): sky.' Source: Reed, A.W. & Peter Dowling, Place Names of New Zealand, 2010.
