Info Origin
Ngāti Rangi history: Now a swamp, this was originally a lake of significance where the only known pā tuna (eel weir) in the upper Whangaehu catchment existed. The lake was named after Paerangi's son, Te Mataraha, and is presumably a place where he gathered kai. The name thus means ‘belonging to Te Mataraha.’ Ō-Te-Mataraha is a wetland that comprises a small lake and swamp.
