Info Origin
Lagoon takes its name from the Pororari River which forms a lagoon behind the beach before flowing out to sea. Māori "poro" means "broken off" and "rari" means "uproar", this name is descriptive of the river as it is reported to rise very quickly in its upper reaches and to create a great uproar, and then as quickly to subside. Refer Williams' "Dictionary of the Māori Language".
