Info Origin
An early attempt to have this lake and Mount Te Hau 2Km to the West named Madagascar was rejected by the Board, as Te Hau had not at that stage been climbed, and the submitter did not have a claim to name the features. Dr Roland Rodda submitted the names Te Hau and Pukutahi after it was climbed in 1947. This was in keeping with the practice of naming Darran Peaks after Māori chiefs of warlike traditions. As Lake Pukutahi lies below Mount Te Hau, it was named after the vanquished chief above which the conqueror Te Hau still reigns.
