Info Origin
Named after the Rakaia River, the lagoon is at its river mouth. The name Rakaia is the South Island form of Rangaia, meaning to arrange in ranks. It refers to the need for strong men to stand in ranks to break the force of the current for the weaker ones when attempting to ford the river. Refer Reeds Dictionary of New Zealand Place Names.
