Info Origin
Ngāti Rangi history: The names of these two lakes derive from the word ‘Rangataua’ meaning war party. Rangataua was also the name of a demi-god who lived in the clouds. He was a famous warrior and his weapons were rain, hail, snow and lightening. Te Mokai o Rangataua (a cloud formation) was his waka which would transport him. Ngāti Rangi would often call upon Rangataua to fight for the tribe. Rangatauanui is the name of the larger of the two lakes, while Rangatauaiti is the name for the smaller lake. Rangatauanui was also the name of the hill between the two lakes.
