Te Atiawa statement: Rotokare is the original Te Atiawa name for this lagoon. Rotokare is on the edge of Kororako Pā and was an important resource gathering site. Ngati Te Whiti korero is that the lake is protected by kaitiaki – an eel with the head of a dog.
