All three names are highly significant to Ngati Kahungunu.’; 'Wairarapa Moana is the traditional name for Lake Wairarapa. The early rangatira Haunui-a-Nanaia named the lake Wai: water; rarapa: glistening eyes; not only of the beauty of the lake, but of the glistening of his eyes on finding his wife Wairaka (or Hinerakahanga). Different accounts ascribe the naming to Tara, or to Kupe, whose daughter suggested, ‘Me waiho tō moana ko te rarapatanga o ou whatu’: ‘Let us remain here at this lake you have descried, your anchor stone’. Kupe replied, ‘E pai ana. Me waiho ko Wairarapa’: ‘Good. Let it remain Wairarapa’.' Source: Dowling, Peter & A.W. Reed, New Zealand Place Names, 2025.
