Info Origin
These significant wildlife habitats were named by lands and survey staff during the Hurunui Country Coastal Reserves Survey. They were named after the Ashworth family who have had a long and important association with the area. Mr J Ashworth Senior, was a pioneer of the carrying trade in north Canterbury and the first man to force a horse and dray over Weka Pass. The stone house he built in 1863 is still the Ashworth Homestead.
