Info Origin
The lagoon has been formerly known locally as Frank Kitts Lagoon, Frank Kitts Park Lagoon and The Lagoon. The name Whairepo Lagoon was suggested by mana whenua (Mark Te One) - referring to the abundance of eagle ray attracted to the food source within the lagoon and also using it as a haven from their predator orca. The Whairepo are considered to be kaitaiki or guardians of the lagoon, looking after the waka activities associated with the Wharewaka. Whai means Ray and Repo means Swamp, but together Whairepo refers to the eagle ray.
