An unacknowledged historic miners hut on DOC land. 2 bunks, river water. Getting pretty rough - needs new sleeping platform as old self-supporting mattresses have had their day (rats have had their feed)
A private hut on a block of private land that cuts into the Ruahines. Hut book entries show that the only users seem to be trampers and hunters - no sign of the owners / builders, whoever they were.
The hut features 2 bunks, and is far from weathertight. A continuous stream of drips greeted me on the rainy day I visited. Maybe put a plastic sheet on the top bunk & sleep on the bottom ...
An Uruwera-standard 4-bunk hut (3 mattresses) on the TL of the Te Weramata Stream. 20m above the river on the base of a spur, the hut looks down over the forks, over what used to be a grassy clearing but is now a thicket of bracken and nettle. Remains of others structures exist beside the stream. Tank water, woodburner, hut in good condition.
DOC triangles mark track up to hut from upriver side of forks clearing.
Basic Hut/bivvy
2-bunk hut near Elliott Stream. The biv is hard to find, hidden on a low terrace between the forks, with a band of tall willows between it and the stream.
A 1884 musterers' hut, now stranded 500m into the Gwarvas Pine forest from the bushedge. A wonderful historic building - pit sawn timbers cut onsite. Two rooms - a main kitchen with a table and open fire, and a bunkroom with four bunks and matresses. Over 130 years old, but still fully functional. Most commonlty reached from the Wakarara roadend (old mill site) via Yeoman's track and popular with mountainbikers.
